What P003A means

The electric boost actuator A positions the variable turbine vanes or the wastegate and reports its position through a sensor.

How the engine computer detects it

In a learning run, for example with the engine warm at idle or after switching off, the control module drives the actuator to its mechanical end stops and stores the sensor values as reference. P003A is set when a learned end position or the total travel lies outside the permitted limits. Typical reasons are worn or sticking vanes or linkage, a faulty actuator, a broken actuator lever, or a replacement actuator that has not been learned in. A usually denotes the first turbocharger in the exhaust flow.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced power mode
  • Underboost or overboost codes possible
  • Sometimes no noticeable symptoms

Common causes

  1. Electronic actuator or its control module faulty Most likely
  2. Vane mechanism, sector gear or linkage worn or sticking Possible
  3. Replacement not learned in, or learning run aborted (e.g. low voltage) Possible
  4. Actuator lever broken Less likely
  5. Position sensor or its wiring faulty Less likely

How to diagnose P003A

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: boost control actuator a, actuator position sensor, turbocharger vanes or wastegate.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P003A?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P003A?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P003A clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
