What P0012 means
The intake camshaft on bank 1 is lagging behind where the computer wants it (retarded). The part that turns the camshaft relies on engine oil pressure, so low, old or wrong oil is the first suspect. A sticking oil control valve, a worn cam phaser or a stretched timing chain are the others.
How the engine computer detects it
The engine control module compares the commanded position of the intake camshaft on bank 1 with the actual position from the camshaft and crankshaft sensors. This code is set when the camshaft stays further retarded than commanded for longer than a calibrated time. Usually the phaser does not move far enough out of its rest position, because oil pressure is too low to release the locking pin, the oil control valve does not open, or the oil screen is blocked. A stretched timing chain also shifts the camshaft towards retarded. Bank 1 is the cylinder bank that contains cylinder 1.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Noticeably less torque and pulling power
- Higher fuel consumption
- Harder starting in some cases
- Rattle from the timing drive if the chain is stretched
Common causes
- Oil pressure or oil level too low, oil worn out Most likely
- Oil control valve sticking closed or its screen blocked Most likely
- Cam phaser defective or seized in its rest position Possible
- Timing chain stretched or jumped a tooth Possible
- Wear debris in the oil circuit, e.g. from a thrust bearing Less likely
How to diagnose P0012
- Check the oil level right away and top up if needed. If an oil change is due, change oil and filter using the viscosity in your owner's manual.
- Clear the code and drive for a few days. If it doesn't come back, the oil was likely the cause.
- Remove the bank 1 intake oil control valve and check its screen for sludge or debris. Metal particles mean something inside the engine is wearing, so have a shop look further.
- If the code persists, have oil pressure measured with a gauge. Low pressure can't move the cam phaser.
- Listen for a rattle at cold start and check for P0008 or P0016. Either points toward the timing chain.
- If the phaser is stuck, it needs replacing, often together with the timing chain.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P0012 (46 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0012?
Yes, for short trips, but check the oil level before you go. The engine will feel weaker and use more fuel. If the oil pressure light comes on or you hear loud rattling or knocking, stop the engine and don't drive further.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0012?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0012 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
Can I fix P0012 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
