What U0101 means
The engine computer and other modules have lost contact with the transmission control module (TCM). Without it, the transmission usually drops into a single backup gear, and the speedometer may stop working. A loss of power or ground at the TCM, or a damaged network wire or connector, is the most common cause.
How the engine computer detects it
The ECU has stopped receiving messages from the transmission control module. The transmission falls into limp-home mode (typically locked in 3rd or 4th gear), the speedometer may stop working, and shift adaptation freezes.

Symptoms
- Multiple warning lights may illuminate
- Affected modules may go into limp mode or shut down
- Specific functions inoperative depending on module
- Diagnostic tools may show communication faults
Common causes
- TCM unpowered or grounded poorly Most likely
- CAN wiring to TCM broken Possible
- Gateway module routing CAN messages incorrectly Less likely
How to diagnose U0101
- Have the battery tested and check that its terminals are clean and tight. A weak battery can make modules drop off the network.
- Check the fuses that feed the transmission module.
- With the ignition off, inspect the TCM connector for corrosion, fluid or bent pins. On some cars the module sits on or inside the transmission, where heat and leaks can damage the connector.
- Check the ground connections for the transmission module and the engine.
- A scanner that reads all modules shows whether the TCM responds. If several modules report lost contact, a shop should check the network wiring rather than the TCM alone.
- Ask about software updates for the TCM. A replacement module usually needs programming.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention U0101 (74 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code U0101?
Drive only a short distance, gently, to a shop or home. With the transmission held in one gear you'll have weak acceleration, so stay off highways. If it won't go into gear or you can't keep up with traffic, have it towed.
