What P0A7A means
P0A7A reports that the inverter stage driving the generator has signalled a fault, for example overcurrent or a failed power switch.
How the engine computer detects it
Toyota uses the code across its hybrids and splits it with information codes. Bulletin T-SB-0142-16 covers 2012-2016 Avalon, Camry and RAV4 Hybrid with MIL on and P0A7A plus information code 122, a generator inverter fail signal caused by overcurrent; the repair replaces inverter and transaxle. A Toyota field report filed with NHTSA describes a 2006 Highlander Hybrid with P0A7A sub code 325, master warning, MIL and Check Hybrid System, traced to a fault inside the inverter assembly. P0A78 and P0A79 are the drive motor inverters, P0A3E generator inverter overheating, P0A92 generator performance.

Symptoms
- MIL, master warning and Check Hybrid System message
- Reduced power or vehicle will not enter ready mode
Common causes
- Internal generator inverter fault with overcurrent (Toyota information code 122) Most likely
- Inverter assembly defective Most likely
- Fault in the generator inside the transaxle Possible
- Insufficient inverter cooling stressing the power stage Less likely
How to diagnose P0A7A
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: generator inverter, hybrid control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0A7A?
If the car drives normally, drive gently to a shop that services hybrids. If it shows a hybrid system warning, loses power or won't go into Ready, pull over and have it towed. Never touch orange high-voltage cables.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0A7A?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
