What P0A1A means
P0A1A reports a fault of the electronics that control the generator, either inside a hybrid inverter or in a belt starter-generator.
How the engine computer detects it
Toyota lists P0A1A for the 2010-2015 Prius and 2012-2017 Prius V together with P0A94, P324E and P3004 as a malfunction inside the inverter assembly with converter; the repair can mean replacing the MG ECU, IPM transistors or the whole inverter. Audi stores P0A1A00 in the engine control unit of 2025 models with a Valeo 48 V starter-generator, paired with a 48 V system fault, and blames starter-generator software. CARB requires monitoring of the generator system. Effects range from a MIL to lost charging or no hybrid drive.

Symptoms
- MIL and hybrid or charging warning on
- Battery no longer charged, start-stop or hybrid drive unavailable
- Vehicle may not reach ready state
Common causes
- Internal failure of the inverter or generator control electronics Most likely
- Control software fault, fixed by an update where the maker provides one Possible
- Supply, ground or bus connection to the module faulty Less likely
How to diagnose P0A1A
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: generator control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0A1A?
Only for a short distance. When the charging system isn't working right, the car may run on battery power alone and can stall, sometimes taking power steering with it. Turn off accessories you don't need and head straight to a shop.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0A1A?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
