What P0A0F means

The control module commanded an engine start – by the hybrid system or an automatic start/stop restart – but the combustion engine did not reach a self-sustaining run within the allowed attempts.

How the engine computer detects it

The code describes the result, not the cause. Toyota sets P0A0F with MIL on the 2010-2013 Prius and Prius v when a separated purge VSV/PCV hose leans out the mixture, often with P3190, P3191 and P0171. Kia traced P0A0F on the 2017-2018 Niro hybrid to an A/C pressure sensor harness chafed by an idler pulley, which disturbs the engine ECU 5 V reference. Audi sets P0A0F00 on 2019 A6/A7 3.0 mild hybrids after the second failed automatic restart, with a drive system warning. Look at fuel, air, ignition and engine sensor faults first.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light and hybrid or drive system warning
  • Engine does not start, or runs briefly and stops
  • Reduced power because the vehicle runs on the battery only

Common causes

  1. Vacuum leak, e.g. separated purge VSV/PCV hose at the throttle body (Toyota Prius) Most likely
  2. Shorted sensor harness pulling down the engine ECU 5 V reference (Kia Niro) Possible
  3. Fuel delivery or ignition fault preventing combustion Possible
  4. Failed automatic restart of a mild hybrid with a cold engine (Audi A6/A7 2019) Less likely

How to diagnose P0A0F

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: hybrid control module, engine starter, hv battery.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0A0F?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0A0F?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
