What P0969 means

Performance fault of pressure control solenoid C.

How the engine computer detects it

Publicly documented only for GM's front-drive six-speeds: on the Saab 9-4X 6T70, clutch pressure solenoid 3 feeds the low/reverse and 4-5-6 clutches through the R1/4-5-6 regulator valve. If measured current differs from the commanded current for 5 s, the module stores a Type C code and freezes the adaptations of both clutches. GM's 2016 table (C456/CBR1 solenoid) sets it after an invalid feedback for 4.4 of 5 s, also without MIL. Other GM users such as the 8- to 10-speeds list only open, low and high for C, and Ford does not use C. Drivers rarely notice more than gradually rougher 4-5-6 or reverse engagements. Electrical faults: P0968, P0970, P0971.

Symptoms

  • Usually no warning light
  • Rougher shifts into 4th, 5th, 6th or reverse over time
  • Shift adaptation stops learning

Common causes

  1. Solenoid 3 with internal fault, current no longer matches the command Most likely
  2. Debris sticking the solenoid or the R1/4-5-6 regulator valve Possible
  3. High resistance in the internal connection to the module Less likely

How to diagnose P0969

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: pressure control solenoid c, wiring harness, tcm.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0969?

Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.
