What P0867 means

P0867 to P0869 cover the system or line pressure of the transmission as a whole: a pressure sensor measures it and the control module compares it with the pressure it commands.

How the engine computer detects it

Faults of the sensor circuit itself have their own codes (Chrysler 68RFE P0932 ff), the single switches A to H have theirs (P0840 ff). Thresholds are not published; the codes are documented in bulletins for the Ram 68RFE and for the Tremec dual clutch of Corvette C8 and Maserati MC20. P0867 is the general pressure fault. GM's Corvette bulletin reads it as 'no system pressure': the pump delivers nothing or the fluid is almost gone, so valve cleaning is pointless and the transmission needs a mechanical check. The car may lose drive completely.

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning lamp or MIL on
  • Weak or no drive
  • Limp mode, car may be stranded

Common causes

  1. Fluid level extremely low or leak Most likely
  2. Fluid pump or its drive faulty Possible
  3. Pressure regulator or relief valve sticking Possible
  4. System pressure sensor faulty Less likely

How to diagnose P0867

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: transmission fluid pressure sensor, transmission pump, pressure control solenoid, transmission valve body, transmission fluid.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0867?

If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0867?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
