What P083B means

Transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch G is one of up to eight pressure inputs (A to H) that SAE J2012 provides for automatic transmissions.

How the engine computer detects it

No maker could be found that uses the letter G: GM's tables up to 2025, Ford's summaries and Allison stop at A to E. The description therefore follows the general rule for transmission inputs in California's OBD regulation, which demands circuit and plausibility checks, and the logic of the A and B codes. P083B means the signal is electrically valid but implausible: a switch does not follow the valve or clutch command, or a sensor deviates from target or from a partner sensor, as GM's CVT checks on A and B.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning lamp on
  • Limp mode with substitute gear or limited ratio
  • Harsh or delayed shifts

Common causes

  1. Dirty or worn valve body, sticking valve Most likely
  2. Pressure sensor or switch drifting Most likely
  3. Mechanical damage: CVT belt or pulleys, pump, clutch Possible
  4. Fluid level low or fluid aged Possible
  5. Control module software thresholds Less likely

How to diagnose P083B

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: transmission fluid pressure sensor, transmission valve body, transmission wiring, transmission control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention P083B (9 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P083B?

If the car shifts normally, drive gently to a shop. If it's stuck in one gear, slips, shifts harshly or won't move out of Park, don't drive it: have it towed.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P083B?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as P083B. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
