What P062F means

Learned values, adaptations, counters and configuration are saved to non-volatile memory (EEPROM or flash-emulated NVM) when the module shuts down.

How the engine computer detects it

P062F means this memory failed a check: GM and GM Europe test at start-up whether the last write at shutdown completed, GM's 6.6 L diesel checks a checksum per data block and whether sectors can be erased, Ford's diesel reports read, write or erase errors (5 s). Lamp behavior varies: GM gasoline engine modules after two trips, the Duramax 2014 and Saab 2.0 L turbo in the first trip, GM transmission modules and GM Europe's 1.6 L turbo without it. Most often the shutdown was interrupted – battery disconnected, voltage dip, main relay dropping out too early. Learned values are lost and relearned. The code also appears in transmission and other modules.

Symptoms

  • Check engine or service lamp (depending on the maker, sometimes after two trips)
  • Learned values lost: rough idle or harsh shifts until relearned
  • Often no driveability symptoms

Common causes

  1. Shutdown interrupted (battery disconnected, voltage dip, main relay drops out too early) Most likely
  2. Weak battery, poor ground or supply at the module Possible
  3. Software fault or incomplete programming Possible
  4. Memory defect in the module (write cycles, ageing) Less likely

How to diagnose P062F

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: engine control module, control module power supply, main relay.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P062F?

Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P062F?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P062F clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
