What P062A means

P062A is a plausibility check of the fuel pump control circuit, not a plain short or open.

How the engine computer detects it

On Ford's 2023 diesels (F-250 to F-550 and 3.0 L) the lift pump module reports its status as a duty cycle; outside 78–82 % – the expected 'good' signal – the code sets after 0.5 s. On the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 turbo (2017) P062A was a false trigger fixed by reprogramming the engine module, without parts. GM and Ford gasoline engines do not use P062A; Ford reports duty cycle deviations there under P025B and P064A. Depending on the cause the pump runs on a substitute value or pressure drops, with lack of power or long cranking. Circuit faults are P0627–P0629, fuel pressure itself P0087 and P0190 ff.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Lack of power or stumbling
  • Delayed start
  • Often no noticeable symptoms (software case)

Common causes

  1. Pump driver module faulty or reporting an error status Most likely
  2. Engine module software (false trigger) Possible
  3. Contact problems or resistance in signal or supply wires Possible
  4. Pump stiff or overloaded Less likely

How to diagnose P062A

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: fuel pump relay, fuel pump driver module, fuel pump, engine control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P062A?

Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P062A?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
