What P04AF means

The evaporative emission (EVAP) system stores fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister; a purge valve lets the engine draw it off, and a vent valve opens the canister to fresh air.

How the engine computer detects it

Purge valve B is a second electric purge valve, usually for the high-load purge line of a turbo engine, which purges to the compressor inlet when there is boost in the manifold (Ford patent). Many makers solve this path with one purge valve and passive check valves instead – Ford tests it as P04F0 – and then have no valve B. CARB requires every purge path to be checked. P04AF is the flow check of the high-load path: under boost the module opens purge valve B, and if tank pressure or mixture do not react, the valve is stuck closed or the path is blocked – a FCA patent describes such a stepwise test. The canister is then not purged under boost and can saturate on load-heavy driving. No manufacturer document available to us uses this code; the description follows CARB and the comparable purge valve A checks (for GM P0443/P0458/P0459).

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Fuel smell
  • EVAP readiness not set

Common causes

  1. Purge valve B stuck closed (gummed, dirt) Most likely
  2. Line to the compressor inlet off, kinked or blocked, check valve sticking Possible
  3. Engine module software or false trigger Less likely
  4. Canister or vent blocked Less likely

How to diagnose P04AF

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: evap purge valve b, high load purge line, purge valve wiring, engine control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P04AF?

Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P04AF?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P04AF clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.

Can I fix P04AF myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
