What P0412 means

The switching valve is the electrically driven valve of this path – a solenoid valve, or on Pierburg/VW systems an electric changeover valve that applies vacuum to the pneumatic combination valve; valve A serves the first path or bank 1, valve B the second.

How the engine computer detects it

P0412 is the general electrical fault in the control circuit of valve A, detected by comparing the driver's feedback with its commanded state. GM has used it since about 2015 specifically for an open circuit (200 kΩ or more, 20 of 25 samples, MIL after two trips) and reports shorts as P041F and P044F; older GM systems and Toyota use it for any driver fault. The valve then stays shut, so secondary air is missing and P0411 or P2441 may follow.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Secondary air inactive
  • Secondary air readiness not set (emission test)
  • Driving normal

Common causes

  1. Switching valve A faulty (coil open or shorted, water ingress) Most likely
  2. Connector corroded or wire open or chafed Most likely
  3. Valve supply missing (fuse, main relay) Possible
  4. Driver in the engine module Less likely

How to diagnose P0412

  1. Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
  2. Inspect the parts involved: air switching valve a, air combination valve, valve wiring, engine control module.
  3. Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
  4. Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code P0412?

Usually yes for a short time, if the car drives normally, the temperature gauge reads normal and the check engine light is steady. If the light flashes, the engine loses power or overheats, or other warning lights come on, pull over and have it checked.

Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0412?

Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.

Will P0412 clear by itself?

The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.

Can I fix P0412 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: easy. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
