What P0110 means
Intake air temperature sensor 1 is the first air temperature sensor in the intake path; depending on the vehicle it is built into the mass air flow sensor, mounted near the air filter or, on some naturally aspirated GM engines, fitted in the intake manifold.
How the engine computer detects it
Most versions are NTC thermistors in a 5 V divider: the hotter the air, the lower the signal voltage. P0110 is the general circuit fault. With a conventional analogue sensor most manufacturers report low and high signals separately (P0112/P0113), so P0110 mainly appears in two cases: with digital (SENT) sensors that combine air mass and temperature, where it stands for lost communication or an implausible status (Ford diesel 2023, after about 5 s), and in some Bosch systems as a collective code whose fault type byte tells open circuit from short to ground. The control module then uses a substitute temperature; some systems also limit torque.

Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced power or torque limitation on some systems
- Otherwise usually inconspicuous; cold start may be slightly worse
Common causes
- Connector or wiring to the sensor open or corroded Most likely
- Sensor or mass air flow sensor with built-in temperature sensor faulty Most likely
- Sensor supply or ground disturbed Possible
- Engine control module faulty Less likely
How to diagnose P0110
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: intake air temperature sensor, intake air temperature sensor wiring, mass air flow sensor.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.

Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code P0110?
Drive gently and only as far as you need to. The engine computer may limit power to protect the engine, so avoid highways and heavy traffic until it's fixed. If the check engine light starts flashing, pull over.
Will my car pass an emissions inspection with P0110?
Probably not in states that test vehicles with an OBD-II scan: an emissions-related code that keeps the check engine light on is usually an automatic fail. Rules differ by state and county, so check yours.
Will P0110 clear by itself?
The light can go off after several drive cycles without the fault, but the code returns if the cause is still there. After a repair, the readiness monitors need a full drive cycle before an inspection.
Can I fix P0110 myself?
Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: easy. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.
