What C0051 means
The chassis or power steering control module has detected that the steering position signal is implausible compared to vehicle motion.
How the engine computer detects it
Stability control may be limited because correct yaw and slip-angle calculation depends on a valid steering angle.

Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
Common causes
- Steering angle sensor not calibrated after alignment or repair Most likely
- Steering angle sensor failed Possible
- Signal path through clock spring degraded Less likely
How to diagnose C0051
- Read every stored code with an OBD-II scanner. If misfire or fuel trim codes are there too, fix those first: they often cause this one.
- Inspect the parts involved: steering angle sensor, power steering module, chassis control module.
- Work through the causes above from most to least likely, cheapest checks first.
- Clear the code and drive a full drive cycle to confirm the repair held.
Reading the code
- C
- Chassis
- 0
- Generic (SAE) code
- 051
- Specific fault
Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with code C0051?
Carefully, and only if the steering feels normal. Power steering assist may be reduced or switched off, which makes the wheel heavy. If steering is heavy or unpredictable, don't drive the car.
Often reported together
Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as C0051. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
