What B0081 means

The car can't reliably tell whether the front passenger's seat belt is buckled, because the switch inside the buckle or its wiring has a fault. You may get false belt reminders or an airbag warning light. A worn buckle switch or damaged wiring under the seat is the usual cause.

How the engine computer detects it

The SRS or body control module has detected a fault in the front passenger seat belt buckle switch circuit. The switch reports whether the belt is fastened and is used for the belt warning lamp and for restraint logic.

Symptoms

  • Warning light or symbol related to the affected system
  • Comfort or safety function impaired

Common causes

  1. Buckle switch failed or stuck Most likely
  2. Wiring under seat damaged Possible

How to diagnose B0081

  1. Note whether the airbag light is on and how the belt reminder behaves with the passenger belt buckled and unbuckled.
  2. Look into the buckle for something stuck in it, such as a coin or food, and remove it without taking anything apart.
  3. Make sure nothing stored under the passenger seat is pressing on the wiring. Don't unplug connectors under the seat: they're part of the airbag system.
  4. Have the code read with a scanner that reads the airbag and body modules. Basic code readers don't show B codes.
  5. Leave repairs to the buckle or seat wiring to a shop, since they're tied into the airbag system.

Counts of owner complaints to the NHTSA that mention B0081 (61 in total), not failure rates: popular models get more complaints simply because more of them are on the road. Models with fewer than 3 complaints are left out.

Questions drivers ask

Can I drive with code B0081?

Yes, the car drives normally. On many cars, though, the airbag system uses this switch when deciding how to deploy the passenger airbag, so get it checked soon if the airbag light is on. Passengers should still buckle up.

Can I fix B0081 myself?

Often yes, with an OBD-II scanner and basic tools. Difficulty: medium. Start with the cheapest checks before replacing expensive parts.

Often reported together

Codes that owners mention in the same NHTSA complaints as B0081. They can point to a shared cause, so it's worth checking them together.
